James McLaren

James founded our business in 1992 to provide quality strategic advice to middle-market healthcare companies. After a twenty-year career at Goldman Sachs, he identified the opportunity to serve emerging-growth companies with the same caliber of attention and expertise that Fortune 500 companies receive. While at Goldman, James served as head of European Corporate Finance in London and International Corporate Finance in New York, leading teams that executed significant global transactions.
James and his wife are active patrons of the arts, supporting emerging artists, theater and dance productions in New York and London. He serves as a Director and Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the leading venue in New York City for contemporary performing arts, and he is a Trustee of The Field, supporting emerging choreographers, composers and directors. James also serves as President of the American Friends of Eton College.
James earned a BA with Honors in Economics from Oxford University. He is known for his diverse interests and eclectic tastes, ranging from racquet sports to contemporary art to growing tomatoes, and he is happiest in the company of his wife, three daughters and five granddaughters.
“The success our clients have achieved and our role in assisting them make our work enormously satisfying. I am proud of what we have accomplished and the reputation that we have built. We have demonstrated that a boutique firm can provide exceptional client service.”

Jennifer Halsey

Jennifer launched our west coast effort in 1998 to more closely serve the growing medical technology market. She works collaboratively with entrepreneurs and investors to determine the optimal path to value creation and timing to engage in partner discussions. Several of her most successful client transactions have resulted from relationships cultivated over many years, underscoring the importance of long-term perspective and flexibility in advising emerging-growth companies.
Jennifer began her career in healthcare investment banking at Goldman Sachs in New York focused on mergers and strategic financings. Prior to Asante, she served as Vice President of Corporate Development for Metra Biosystems, a public medical technology company in Silicon Valley. Jennifer graduated with Highest Honors and Distinction from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead Scholar. She serves on the board of the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund, co-chairs Carolina’s west coast capital campaign and remains a diehard Tar Heel basketball fan.
Jennifer and her husband, a software entrepreneur, live with their sons in Menlo Park where they are actively engaged in their schools and community. They love hosting celebrations, from five-year-old birthday parties to events supporting philanthropic and social causes to closing dinners. Having studied music from a young age, Jennifer leads a lively sing-along around the piano at the end of a good party.
“The factor that differentiates our firm is the extent to which we take ownership of the outcome. We are diligent in helping our clients prepare so that they are credible in their disclosure and avoid pitfalls during negotiations. More than anything, we love coming through for our clients. We appreciate their life stories, and we want them to achieve the fulfillment – professional, personal and financial – that they deserve.”
